Why Is Buffing Commonly Used on Oxidized Gelcoat?

Gelcoat creates the smooth, glossy exterior found on many fiberglass boats and RVs. As that surface weathers and oxidizes, it becomes dull, porous and chalky.

Traditional restoration commonly involves using rubbing compound and a power buffer to remove the deteriorated surface layer. Finer polishing products may then be used before wax or another protective finish is applied.

When done correctly, this method can produce excellent results.

However, compounds work by abrasively removing a small amount of material from the surface. That is one reason it is important to use an appropriate restoration method for the condition of the gelcoat rather than automatically choosing the most aggressive option.

How Can Oxidation Be Removed Without a Buffer?

How Do I Know When the Oxidation Is Gone?

Do not judge the preparation only by whether the surface looks shiny.

After oxidation removal, Poli Glow recommends looking for a surface that is:

  • Free of chalky material
  • Uniformly dull
  • Free of stains
  • Free of blotches
  • Consistent in appearance

The colors may still appear faded or bleached after preparation.

That can be normal because the protective gloss has not yet been restored.

What Restores the Gloss After the Oxidation Is Removed?

Once the oxidation is gone, Poli Glow® is applied to the properly prepared gelcoat.

Poli Glow is a water-based acrylic polymer finish that adheres to and seals the surface. Multiple thin coats build the final glossy appearance and help protect the gelcoat from moisture, contaminants, UV exposure and future oxidation.

The finish requires 48 hours to fully cure.

Is No-Buff Restoration Right for Every Boat?

Not necessarily.

Different levels and types of damage require different restoration methods. If a gelcoat surface has deep scratches, cracks, areas where the gelcoat has worn through, or damage beyond ordinary oxidation, a more extensive restoration or professional repair may be necessary.

The important distinction is between surface oxidation and physical gelcoat damage.

For an oxidized but otherwise restorable surface, Poli Glow provides a process that does not require the traditional compound-and-electric-buffer approach.
